Goochland will not tolerate hate
Second Union Baptist Church on Hadensville Fife Road in western Goochland has a proud history and prouder future.
Long a beacon of faith and bastion of goodness in the African American community and the whole county, Second Union was desecrated by vile and cowardly predators. These despicable vandals broke windows and caused other damage to the church and historic Second Union School.
All citizens of the county, especially those in its western reaches, are outraged at the actions of these animals who can find no better use for their energies than to maliciously damage a place of peace.
Goochland is a safe haven in our crazy world. It’s a good place to raise children and grow old. Community is a way of life here, not a buzz word in a developer’s brochure.
When an event like this abomination shatters the peace and security that usually calls Goochland home, we fear that it is the end of a good thing.
Authorities seem to be debating whether or not this heinous offense constitutes a hate crime. It surely was not an expression of love.
The perpetrators of these contemptible deeds must be caught and brought to justice. The loathsome creatures that took pleasure in the damage inflicted on Second Union Church must be severely punished.
Whatever sentence is handed down by the justice system, Goochland citizens must make it clear to all that respect for the universal freedom to worship and sanctity of private property is not only the law, but a way of life in Goochland.

There should be no such thing as a "hate crime." When we permitted our representatives to create crimes and dictate punishment based on what a person 'thinks' or 'believes' we took a big step to George Orwell's 1984. The hate crimes need to be removed from the books along with the legislators who put them there. They represent a dangerous intrusion by the government into the privacy of our thoughts.
This crime should be punished as any other property crime and the fact that the scene of the crime is a church should not enter into consideration.
So very sad when the volunteer and good faith efforts of so many interested and proud Goochland residents are destroyed by vandalism of any kind. Every resident should be outraged and pledge to take our county back into the hands of good and decent people who respect the property, values & lives of others and condemn actions such as this.
I stumbled across your blogs today and enjoyed reading them. My husband and I fell in love with Goochland and are moving to the Hockett Road 250 area soon.
This is such a shame. Our country lacks respect on so many counts including not having enough respect for our highest leader to let him speak to school children about doing well in school without making a ridiculous controversy out of it.
Thanks for attending board and other meetings that many of us cannot attend. Your comments appear to be fairly unbiased / fair reporting and helpful to a citizen forming their opinions.
