Remembering

Honor the fallen

Today, Memorial Day, we pay homage to those Americans who went to war and never came home. They left farm and factory, city and village, home and safety, for the unknown perils and horror of battle.
Some of our war dead lie in meticulously groomed cemeteries beneath gleaming white markers in America or on foreign shores. Others rest anonymously in watery graves beneath the world’s oceans, or lost on the floor Asian jungles.
Many were young almost kids, the promise of their maturity never realized. They went, they served, they died.
They must all be remembered and honored.
A particularly poignant reminiscence of a local boy who did not come home, was written by James Richmond in the current issue (Volume 50) of the Goochland County Historical Society Magazine. Letters homes written by Robert Rollo Richmond tell a story familiar to many who went to war and the families who remained behind.
In this strange time, we cannot gather to honor the fallen, but there are many ways that we can be together while apart. Goochland American Legion Post 215 will premiere a virtual tribute at noon at American Legion Post 215 Goochland VA on Facebook and You tube at noon.

Freedom is not free.
